Spring Sort-Out: Our Top Tips

Spring Sort-Out: Our Top Tips for a Fantastic Start to the Year

Out with the old and in with the new: here are our spring sort-out tips for 2022!

The winds are getting warmer and the daffies are coming out in full force, it can only mean one thing…spring is on its way! What better time to rehaul your life than with a new season that brings with it so much change?

In addition to regular cleaning tips in this list, we have also included more unique things to tackle during your spring clean this year – digital detox anyone?

Take a look below and see if anything tickles your fancy with a feather duster!

1. Get Started

So you know what you need to do…but where on earth do you start? The cupboards? The loft? The garage? Let’s be frank, you probably won’t get everything you want to do done in just one day. Write out what it is you want to achieve during your spring sort-out and then prioritise them in the order they need to be done. Should some be done earlier than others?  Can odd bits be put off until a few days later?

Once you have a list of things you want to get done, you then need to add them to a to-do list! Most people just use an app on their phone for this, but there is something a bit more satisfying about physically ticking off an item in a notebook! Whatever you use – get started!

2. Be Strict with Yourself

There is sentimental value attached to an array of things – clothes and household items being only a couple!

We aren’t saying for you to get rid of your childhood teddy bear or your child’s first drawing, but things that you don’t have any emotional connection to or that don’t serve as big of a purpose as they once did – REHOME THEM!

There are lots of ways to make sure that the things you are getting rid of go to good homes where people will love your items just as much as you did. Charity shops and drop-offs, online sites such as eBay and Vinted are just some of the many places where people appreciate second-hand just as much, or even more than newly purchased items!

3. Face the Attic

Du-dum, du-dum, du-dum…anyone seen Jaws? So the attic might be less unnerving than a vast ocean with sharks, but it can still cause a bit of anxiety if you aren’t a fan of small dark spaces, creepy crawlies, or musty smells.

But you know that old saying – “face your fears”? Bang on. Think about how proud you will be of yourself afterward for facing the dinginess of the loft! It all needs to be sorted, and it’s better to get it done sooner rather than later.

Need an incentive? Why not set up a reward for yourself for when you finish? A bar of chocolate? A glass of wine? A trip to the gym? Or your favourite movie?

4. Donate to Those in Need

There will always be someone more fortunate than you, and there will always be someone more unfortunate than you. We always feel that we have a duty to help those in need, no matter their situation, and a great way to do this is by donating your unwanted items to a charity.

There are some fantastic charities out there, from well-known to small and local. Do some googling to find out your local drop-off and start gathering your items together!

In light of recent events, why not consider donating your clothes and items to charities that are helping Ukrainian refugees after fleeing their homes due to war and conflict?

5. The 'One Year Rule'

We know how easy it can be to get carried away. You keep one item, then another, and then your routine starts to lapse and you decided to keep all of your clothes and then buy an extra item or two to go with that outfit, you know the one you wear once in a blue moon?

This is why we have a way to keep you on track and it’s called the ‘One Year Rule’ – basically, besides occasionwear, if you haven’t worn an item in over a year (this then covers all seasons) THROW. IT. OUT.

Well, not throw it out, but you know, donate it or recycle it!

6. Reinvent Your Style

What better time to figure out a new style for yourself than during a spring-sort out when you are sorting through old clothes that don’t suit you anymore?

We all know that there are certainly times when we look at certain items of clothing and think ‘what on earth were you thinking??’ Whether it be threads from your foray into punk or those bow ties from your preppy hipster phase. Perhaps it’s time for another reinvention?

Why not look into charity shops and online second-hand sellers to grab your ‘new look’ items for a bargain? That way you’re helping a good cause and giving life to second-hand clothes!

7. Organise, Organise, Organise!

You know that bookcase you wanted to alphabetise, or that bathroom caddy you wanted to rearrange? What better time to tackle these organisational challenges than during a spring sort-out?

However, you don’t have to go it alone! There are many products that you can get to tackle your clutter and help with your organisation, from adjustable drawer compartments to colour coding and space savers. We can all use a little help now and again, and who knows – you might find that one organisational hack that you’ve been looking for!!

Take a look here at some great organisational tips from top experts!

8. Do a Deep Clean

We all know that spring is a great time for clear-outs and decluttering, and during these clear-outs, you’re often left with dust and grime if household items haven’t been moved in quite some time!

This means that clear-outs are the perfect opportunity to really get into a deep clean of your home! Grab the bottles, grab your trusty vacuum and start with one room at a time. Make sure to get into all of the nooks and crannies that you wouldn’t be able to access as easily during your weekend run-around and breathe in your new clean and fresh environment.

If you are doing a whole house deep clean, you might need lots of bottles of cleaning products. Unfortunately, single-use plastics have terrible repercussions on our planet and we need to help look after it. Before commencing your deep clean, why not look at switching up your cleaning products for something more environmentally friendly but just as powerful?

OceanSaver is one of our favourite earth-loving cleaning brands, why not take a look at some of the products they have to help you and your family live better?

9. Do a Digital Detox

Decluttering isn’t just for the physical! Do you get flustered over having an overwhelming amount of emails in your inbox, say 50,000 like a certain editor? Look, I don’t know how it got to that stage, but I just know that I kept putting it off and saying that I’d go through it all later. Well later never came and I had to spend practically a whole day going through it all. It wasn’t as easy as a bulk delete as many were quite important.

However, once I started, it was much easier to then keep on top of and I generally try to do a weekly digital declutter to help clear my mind and mental space. Emails aren’t the only thing that could use a detox – take a look at your various documents, pictures, music, and miscellaneous files you no longer use as well.

Why not look into your Facebook and see what can be cleaned up  – any ‘friends’ you no longer see or keep in touch with, how about you click ‘unfollow’? You don’t have to be as savage as going for a fun ‘unfriend’ but using the ‘unfollow’ button will keep their frequent posts about each and every holiday they seem to be going on off of your feed whilst still keeping them as your friend!

10. Create New Habits for Summer

Many people say that whole ‘new year, new me’ stuff which often fails by January 2nd. We think that a spring sort-out is the perfect time to officially start a new habit! The weather is getting warmer, the sun stays out longer and nature is coming out in full force – those daily runs you couldn’t muster the courage for back in January suddenly look much more appealing in the light of spring!

Whatever habits you want to start, spring is the best time to begin. Start your daily runs or walks, pick up a painting palette or camera, visit the local lambs and calves in nearby fields, start cooking more from scratch and eat your meals OUTSIDE! What a notion!

Looking for inspiration? Take a look at some of our favourite local walks in and around Cambridgeshire!

We hope this list has provided you with a wide variety of fab ideas to help your spring sort-out this year!

10 Ways to Practise Gratitude

10 Ways to Practise Gratitude & the Many Benefits

With all the stress and worry going on in the world at the moment, it can be difficult to practise gratitude on a daily basis – or even ever!

However, it is important to stay grounded no matter if we find ourselves in whirlwinds of good or bad. Staying grounded is what keeps us connected to each other and the world around us. Showing gratitude for the good and bad in our lives is a great way to appreciate the lives we have on this wondrous planet which provides us with all that we could ever need and want.

Whenever you feel stressed, sad, low, or anxious – or even just happy or joyful, take a moment to spread thanks out into the universe and appreciate your life for what it is: perfectly imperfect.

1. Perform Random Acts of Kindness

By Matt Collamer on UnSplash

First on our list to help practise gratitude on a daily basis is to perform acts of kindness to others. These could be strangers, family members, friends, or even people you might not be too fond of.

Acts like letting people out in front of you during traffic, or leaving someone the last slice of cake, in addition to benefitting the receiver, can also improve your mental wellbeing and happiness over time. Performing an act of kindness increases a person’s sense of gratitude through the act of doing something generous for another person.

2. Share Gratitude with Others

By Kelly Sikkema on UnSplash

You know how yawning is contagious? Gratitude can be too!

Sometimes using gratitude as more of a focal point during the day and expressing it out loud can help others around you feel the same. Why not express gratitude before a big meal? Or when out for a walk? Or when seeing family?

People pick up on emotions, so when you express gratitude for the things you are thankful for, it will be even more beneficial to those who perhaps have been more adverse to outwardly expressing happiness. When you help others you in turn help yourself.

3. Create Connections

By Helena Lopes on UnSplash

Something that improves when you practise gratitude, is your connections with other people. If you are spreading kindness and appreciating others, your relationships with your family and friends and connections with strangers will grow.

Everyone wants to feel loved and appreciated, and when this comes from complete strangers is adds something a bit more special. Someone could be having the worst day imaginable, but making a new connection with someone who went out of their way to show kindness can help them in ways you wouldn’t imagine.

4. Share Material Possessions

By Elaine Casap on UnSplash

Sharing your possessions with those in need is a great way to practise gratitude for the material things you own, as well as performing an act of kindness for someone else.

Offer your tools to help a neighbour to carry out their household DIY tasks. Bake some delicious biscuits as a no-strings-attached gift that you thought that they might like. Or why not give your unwanted clothes away, either to friends looking for a new outfit or to the local charity shop. It’s a great way to both practise gratitude and to help someone out!

5. Offer Your Time

By Lukas Blazek on UnSplash

We all know how it feels when someone gives up their time to help you with something. You feel valued, appreciated, and worthy of their time. It is the same the other way round.

It goes without saying, that giving up too much of your time, all the time can have a detrimental effect on your wellbeing and ability to get things one for yourself. However, once in a while, it is nice to offer your time and patience to others to help them in their time of need, without being taken for granted. It is a great way to practise gratitude in helping someone else and also for the other person to be grateful for your help in the first place.

6. Celebrate Others' Achievements

By Krakenimages on UnSplash

Repeat after me: ‘your achievements are not diminished by celebrating the successes of others.’ And again.

Sometimes it can be overwhelming if everyone seems to be achieving great things in their lives at a time that is particularly difficult for you. But your successes aren’t reduced as a result of the successes of others, and neither are your failures.

We can be grateful that others achieve their successes in life, and be happy for them, without feeling worse about ourselves. Showing appreciation for another’s success also helps them feel heard and happy too!

7. Embrace the Bad

By Marco Bianchetti on UnSplash

Life isn’t all chocolates and roses. Sometimes it’s murky soil and weeds and that’s okay.

We cannot appreciate the good in our lives without accepting the bad. The negative aspect of our lives should be embraced. It might be difficult at first, particularly when we are dealing with grief or crime. Of course, this doesn’t mean that we can’t do something about the negative emotions, such as cry, scream, or be a bit kinder to ourselves for a while.

Having people around and expressing gratitude for their company during difficult times can help us to heal and overcome any dark moments that we might encounter.

8. Practise Mindfulness

By S Migaj on UnSplash

Mindfulness is a great tool to help us to practise gratitude daily. Taking time out to ground yourself and appreciate the present moment as it is has a variety of benefits, from an improvement in mental health, to better sleep and a happier outlook on life.

There are many ways you can use mindfulness to help you be grateful for the things around you. You could use yoga, meditation, breathwork, or being at one in the world during a long walk.

Why not take a look at this simple mindful gratitude exercise.

9. Pay Attention

By Brands People on UnSplash

On the same level as using mindfulness, paying closer attention to the world around you is another way to practise gratitude. Taking time to focus on the little things allows you to appreciate everything in your life and to be grateful for things you might have missed without spending time to acknowledge them.

Paying attention doesn’t just apply to settings, it can also apply to friends and family. Pay attention to their emotions, the things they say, or how they act. Listen when they confide in you. When you pay more attention you become a better friend.

10. Keep a Gratitude Journal

By Gabrielle Henderson on UnSplash

So you are using all the ideas above to practise gratitude on a daily basis, but how do you keep track of all the things you are thankful for in your life? By keeping a gratitude journal of course!

There are many on the market today, some plain, some sparkly, and some with prompts to help you come up with new things you are grateful for each and every day. Why not take a look here at some gratitude journal ideas to help you head into 2022 with a grateful outlook on your life?

We hope this list has provided you with a wide variety of ideas to help you practice gratitude on a daily basis and improve your mental wellbeing.

How to Make Your Serviced Accommodation Your Home Away from Home

How to Make Your Serviced Accommodation Your Home Away From Home

Working away from home can be challenging, but there are ways to make your serviced accommodation feel like your home away from home.

Despite lockdown, we are still open to hosting those needing accommodation for a variety of reasons, including those working nearby, for short or long term stays. Get in touch today for more information or to make a booking!

There are a number of ways you can make your serviced accommodation feel like home, including setting out sentimental photos, displaying beautiful plants, and even packing a board game or two!

1. Bring Some Home Comforts

By Melody Less on UnSplash

We all have that sentimental item that reminds us of home. It could be a warm blanket, a fluffy pillow, or perhaps a cuddly toy? Whatever it is, bring it with you to your serviced accommodation to make it feel like home.

Keeping something comforting close by when you are away from home might even improve your mental health through familiar smells and materials to touch.

2. Don't Forget Your Personal Essentials

By Folu Eludire on UnSplash

Is there something you have at home that you think will brighten your days away? You might have a board game, a yoga mat, meditation crystals, a favourite book or even a funny movie. Perhaps bring your tablet or iPad with you for some crossword, brain training  or wordsearch apps?

Make sure you bring whatever you need with you, as it will definitely help you feel a bit more like yourself and connect you to your home sweet home.

3. Set Out Photos of Loved Ones

By Charisse Kenion on UnSplash

You must have many sentimental photos of loved ones dotted around your house. Why not grab a few and bring them with you to help make your serviced accommodation feel like home? You could set out photographs in the living room, kitchen and bedrooms so that your family and friends are always near by.

Having photos near by allow you to stay connected to loved ones, even if you are unable to see them for a little while!

4. Get Out Your Favourite Scent

By Cosiela Borta on UnSplash

Our serviced accommodations may smell beautiful and fresh, but there is nothing quite like that familiar scent from home. The scent might be your favourite candle, air freshener, reed diffuser, soap, or body lotion. The sense of smell is very powerful when it comes to calming the mind and anxieties!

Whatever gets your nose tingling and makes your soul happy, bring it along and smell it whenever you feel stressed or overwhelmed.

5. Fully Unpack

By Anete Lusina on UnSplash

It can be tempting to keep a few items in your suitcase for organisational purposes, but if you really want your serviced accommodation to feel homely, it would be more beneficial to completely unpack and make use of the various drawers and cupboards for your items.

Doing this will make you feel fully at home in your new surroundings. However, be sure to make a note of where everything is because you don’t want to forget anything on your departure!

6. Bring Your Favourite Snacks & Drinks

By Jessy Smith on UnSplash

There is nothing quite like your favourite salty snack or glass of something special to make you happy after a difficult day! Whatever it is you would have to destress at home, why not bring it to your serviced accommodation?

It could be your favourite chocolate bar, bottle of wine, pack of biscuits, instant noodles or for the healthier, perhaps your favourite fruits, smoothies or mixed nuts!

7. Bring Alexa Along for the Ride

By Rahul Chakraborty on UnSplash

Like many of us, having an electronic know-it-all friend in the house is a luxury that you might have become accustomed to! To help minimise the loneliness that might occur from living alone away from home, why not bring Miss Alexa or Mr Google Home with you to your serviced accommodation?

Having the electronic helper with you will make you feel right at home, and it might also provide some light entertainment too! Why not ask it a joke or strike up a conversation?

8. Incorporate Greenery

By Scott Webb on UnSplash

No matter how big or how small, a bit of greenery can always brighten up a space! It could be a prickly cactus, a floral bouquet, a vibrant fern or even a delicious-smelling herb! You might already have a special plant at home, or you could take a trip to the local garden centre to pick up something new.

When you arrive at your serviced accommodation, make sure to position the plant in a space where you know you will appreciate it and be able to view it every day.

9. Keep to Your Routines

By Kelly Sikkema on UnSplash

It can be difficult to stick to routines when you are in a new environment as everything is different. However, if a routine is something that you find calming and thrive on, then perhaps try your very best to incorporate it into your new space.

It could be as simple as working out or taking a walk at the same time every day or even just establishing a time for eating or finishing work. You don’t have to transfer your entire routine, just the little parts that work for you.

10. Stay in Contact with Friends & Family

By William Iven on UnSplash

This one might sound obvious, but for a serviced accommodation to truly feel like a homely,  be sure to keep in close contact with family and friends. This may be through phone calls, messaging, or video chat, but whatever it is, just know that they will probably be missing you just as much as you miss them.

There are many different ways to stay in contact with loved ones. Why not take a look at Zoom so that you can see their lovely faces each and every day?

We hope these ideas on how to make your serviced accommodation your home away from home, have been informative and has provided you with the knowledge you need when you next work away from home!

Remember to check out our properties to make use of our uncluttered spaces and quiet surroundings for you and your guests to help you focus and get work done!

Mental Health and Self Care: Our Top 10 Tips

Mental Health & Self Care:
Our Top 10 Tips

There are a variety of ways you can look after your mental health, from contacting friends and working with charities, to looking into holistic therapies and medication. Taking some much-needed time out for self-care during this difficult time is imperative for your mental health. We all need to be selfish with our time and happiness sometimes!

At Boutique Luxe, our guests have exclusive access to their own private Jacuzzi at two of our gorgeous properties: The Retreat and The Conker Tree, to help promote rest and relaxation

There are many ways and things you can do to help you cope and work with your mental health ups and downs, and please if you need anybody, do not hesitate to reach out. We are always here for you.

1. Stay in Touch

By Paul Hanaoka on UnSplash

It might be difficult, but try to maintain a good relationship with those you love. Friends and family can be a great comfort during times of stress, anxiety, and depression. It is important to not isolate yourself because doing so can have negative effects on both your own mental health and also your relationships with friends.

You never know how much a friend could help you, or even how much you could help a friend.

2. Do Things For Others

By Tim Marshall on UnSplash

Sometimes you need to interact with others to get out of your headspace. Why not look into volunteering in the local community, working with charitable organisations, being a good neighbour, or caring for abandoned animals?

Helping others is both good for those in need, but also good for you. It raises your self-esteem and helps you feel like part of a community and a part of the bigger world around you.

3. Ask for Help

By Dustin Belt on UnSplash

Please do not be afraid to ask for help. Swallow your pride and reach out to someone. It could be anyone: a friend, a family member, a therapist, a doctor, or a mental health worker.

If you don’t want to talk in person, perhaps reach out through phone, text, or even email. It is always better to ask for help when you need it and to potentially get advice and guidance, rather than to suffer in silence alone.

4. Cut Down on Alcohol

By Dylan Gillis on UnSplash

Sometimes alcohol is a nice relaxer. It is a depressant, it lowers inhibitions and blanks your mind for a little while. But relying on alcohol as a coping mechanism can get you into sticky territory. If you feel yourself leaning towards it a little too much, make sure to cut back and turn to something else to help you cope.

Ring a friend or family member each time you feel anxious or write the thought down and save it for another time to address it with a therapist.

5. Keep a Jar of Happiness

By Szilvia Basso on UnSplash

For another coping mechanism, why not get a little jar and fill it with things that make you happy? Little quotes to lift your spirits, little sweets or chocolates, special nostalgic scents or haptic, sensory items, all help to take your mind off the negatives and help to ground you in the present.

‘Grounding’ is a great practise to use when you feel overwhelmed, so include in the jar something you can see, feel, taste, hear and smell to help your wandering mind stay focused and centred.

6. Keep Active & Get Some Sunlight

By PixPoetry on UnSplash

Being active and experiencing the great outdoors is imperative to good mental health. Yes, the sunlight might not always be as strong and shining, but that doesn’t mean that the rain, the snow, and the wind don’t also deserve our attention!

No matter the weather, you can be active inside and outside. You can do yoga or sit-ups in your front room or jumping jacks and sprints outside in the misty rain. Whatever it is, appreciate the beautiful world around you and the wonders of the human body!

7. Go Holistic

By Lina Trochez on UnSplash

There are so many holistic and alternative therapies suitable to help with your mental health. Why not look into Ayurveda, natural supplements, meditations or vitamins?

If you want to look for natural remedies, there are so many available to you. Ayurveda has strong research, natural supplements such as Ashwaghanda and vitamins such as magnesium are all viable options to help you with your mental health and to lift your moods naturally.

8. Don't Be Afraid of Medication

By Christina Victoria on UnSplash

Natural, holistic therapies might work for some people, but for others, they might not be as effective. That is OKAY. Please do not be afraid of medications or think that they make you less of a human being because your mental health is difficult to handle.

Many people will be on some form of mental health medication at some point in their life and many people will not talk about it. You don’t have to either. You just need to know that it is the right choice for you at the present moment. It might not be forever. It is just necessary for right now.

9. Play Holidays!

Is there a holiday you particularly enjoy? Christmas? Easter? Summer? Thanksgiving? Why not have a mini celebration of that holiday? Have a little turkey dinner and watch Christmas films in April. Eat chocolate and have hot cross buns in September. Sit outside and read a book with a ice lolly in October.

It might sound silly. But holidays make us happy. If happiness is what you need right now, why not give it a try?

10. Look Into Therapies

By Christina @wocintechchat.com on UnSplash

If confiding in friends feels too stressful and anxiety-inducing, perhaps look into therapies with a professional? Therapists are trains to help us work through all situations and all emotions. Put your trust in them and in the confidentiality of the session.

Seeing a therapist doesn’t make you weak. It makes you strong to recognise an issue and to address it to avoid it affecting the rest of your life in a negative way.

You never know how much it might help you.
