What on earth are sauna whisks? They aren’t found everywhere which is why here at Boutique Rooms, we have put together a list of everything you should know about them. Saunas offer a variety of benefits that can be enhanced through additional elements, such as sauna whisks.
At Boutique Rooms, our guests have exclusive access to their own private sauna at our gorgeous rustic property, The Retreat, allowing you to make the most out of the benefits of a sauna every day you stay with us!
But how do you know where to begin?
Below is an in-depth explanation for sauna whisk use, types and preparation to help you become an expert in sauna-use!
Sauna whisks are a bunch of small tree twigs from a variety of trees, used in saunas to give massages. Using them in a sauna is intended to promote improved blood circulation and skin cleansing.
To use, one person dips the whisk in warm water and then proceeds to tap the whisk lightly on the body of another person. Doing so, releases pleasant earthy scents into the sauna, adding the additional benefit of aromatherapy.
Sauna whisks are common around the world. In Finland they are known as “vihta” and in Russia, they are called “venik”. They can be considered to be a nice addition or a compulsory element to a sauna experience, depending on where you are in the world.
Whisk bunches can be made from different trees, and each tree has its own benefits when used in this particular way.
Dried whisks need to be soaked in warm water before use to soften leaves and enhance efficacy. This can be done by submerging and soaking the whisks in a bucket of cold water for 30 minutes. Then, flip the whisk so that the handle is in the water but the leaves are exposed. Soak the handle for another 30 minutes.
Finally, prepare a bucket of warm water in the sauna and once the 30 minutes are up, take the sauna whisk out of the cold water and place it in the warm water bucket. It is now ready to be used!
This process can be sped up if you only have a short time to spare. For the quicker method, follow the previous routine, however, submerge the whisk for only 10 minutes each way instead of 30 minutes.
We hope this list has been informative and has provided you with the knowledge you were looking for to take your sauna usage to the next level!
